Chiribim Chiribom

A shtetl song of laughter and tears, sung in Russian by Elechka.

"Chiribim Chiribom" is one of the most beloved comic songs of the Yiddish world, a tune that grew up in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe in the early twentieth century, traditionally sung around the spring holiday of Purim. Its famous refrain, "chiribim, chiribom," is a nign, a wordless melody made simply to set a playful mood and to invite everyone to join in. The song carries the warmth and the gentle self-mockery of the shtetl, the small market town that was home to so much of Jewish life.

The verses tell little tales straight out of that world. There is a wise rebbe who boasts that he has come to an understanding with the clouds, then walks out without an umbrella and gets soaked to the skin while the rest of the town stays dry. There is the legendary town of Chelm, the place of happy fools who sing and dance and laugh at themselves, and the song turns its joke back on us: which of us is the wise one, and which the fool? It is humour and wisdom at once, the kind that laughs and remembers hardship in the same breath.

For audiences far beyond the Yiddish-speaking world, the song was carried to fame by the American singers The Barry Sisters in 1961, and it has been sung ever since at weddings and celebrations in many languages.

In this recording Elechka sings "Chiribim Chiribom" in Russian, with her own arrangement and guitar, in a Russian text written for the song. It is part of a project that set out to carry these Jewish songs into Russian so that a new audience could hear not only the melodies but the stories and the spirit inside them. The aim was always to keep the humour and the tenderness intact.

These Russian recordings are also where the larger story began. The English-language musical film JEWISH grew out of these originals, out of the same songs and the same wish to share them. Listeners from many backgrounds have found their way to this performance, some remembering a grandmother or a mother who once sang these tunes, others meeting the music for the first time and being moved by how a simple, funny little song can hold so much feeling.

Так залихватски отплясывали под Вашу песню, что соседи"(те , что- "под нами") предъявили нам ультиматум: либо - спускаемся праздновать с ними , где мы уже никого не потревожим (это - на первом этаже), либо - они со всей снедью идут к нам !
