Co-owner of the Jewish Snack
Kate Miller
She hears the music in people before they hear it themselves.
Kate Miller is the other owner of the Jewish Snack and the film's other mother. Strictly Irish-Catholic, she manages the light while her husband Guy handles the shadows.
She calls everyone love: students, strangers, even Elaine Vanderbilt, which infuriates her. It is not a verbal tic so much as a worldview. Kate carries a spiritual depth that lets her hear the music in people's heartbeats before they ever speak, and she is rarely wrong about what she hears.
She is the steady force that keeps the Miller family and the students from drifting apart, and she holds one of the strangest friendships in the story: the billionaire Bunny Montgomery trusts Kate's judgment above anyone else's, partly because Kate is the only person who never treats her like a walking checkbook.
